Every individual, including myself, is subject to a variety of factors that influence how they perceive information and the world at large. This is called bias, and is simply a fact of life. Depending on religious affiliation, culture, ethnicity, political affiliation, etc, people will filter or interpret a single event or piece of information differently. For instance, I myself am a young student pursuing higher education. In addition to this, I am also of lower socio-economic status than compared to a number of my peers. These factors are a few of the many filters that influence my perception of the world. Given the very nature of bias, these components are bound to infiltrate into my classes and studies. Since biases affect how we interpret information, it only makes sense that bias would affect how we perceive history. Presentism is defined as “an attitude toward the past dominated by present-day attitudes and experiences”. This means that we have a certain lense when viewing the past on account of living in the 21st century. The world is an ever evolving life form; the world in x time period is most likely a completely different landscape compared to the world in y time period. Morals, ideologies, or social expectations, among other things, vary substantially between societies even in the present day, let alone from societies throughout the past. Point being, presentism can also heavily skew our understanding of historical motivation, to the point that where it is easy to misinterpret historical events.
