There are many different types of friendships, ranging from lifelong friends to toxic friends, and even imaginary friends too. Although there are many different types of friendships from the ones listed, nearly all of them can be organized into one of the three friendship categories made by Aristotle. In the novella of Mice and Men, George and Lennie have nothing but themselves as they move around to find work during the Great Depression, and have developed a unique relationship that can fall under one of these categories. The three categories are friendships of pleasure, utility, and virtue. George acted as if it was a chore to look out for Lennie, but he made sure to take good care of him, and made sure that others knew that Lennie was a good guy and a great worker, even though he wasn't the brightest. Lennie and George's friendship can be described differently, but if it was to be categorized as one of Aristotle’s friendship types, I would put them into the virtue category. I would do this because although George has to take care of Lennie all the time, and most of the time it’s a pain for him, George does genuinely care for Lennie and respects him, and Lennie does the same for George. They’ve been through a lot together, and even if something was Lennie’s fault, George never left his side and continued to stay with him. Their friendship is very heartwarming and genuine. At the end of the book when Curley went to search for and kill Lennie, George did the right thing, even if it meant he had to kill Lennie. George was there to make sure that Lennie had a peaceful and painless death instead of what Curley would do to Lennie if he saw him first. What George did showed lots of respect, even though he really didn’t want to kill him. This part in the book allows the readers to understand that
