“The Odyssey” is an epic poem created by Homer, in the eighth century. This poem focuses mainly on Odysseus, king of Ithaca, and also known as the hero of the story. In “ The Odyssey “, Odysseus goes on a 10 year adventure back home to Ithaca after the Trojan war, which lasted 10 years. Throughout this long, tiring journey, there were many obstacles and challenges Odysseus and his men had to face.
Of course, like anyone, he had a life before going off to war. He was born on the Isle of Ithaca. During his childhood, Odysseus showed remarkable athletic abilities, he enjoyed hunting with his dog, and he entertained himself with archery and did very well at it. In his early adult years, he married Penelope, daughter of Icarius of Sparta and the nymph Periboea. Penelope and Odysseus only had one son together named Telmachus. Odysseus was one of Helen’s ( Queen of Sparta ) suitors before marrying Penelope. At first, Odysseus refused to go to a war fought for a woman so he acted as if he was insane. Then, the messenger put Telemachus in front of his plow forcing Odysseus to fight, proving he wasn’t actually insane. Odysseus ended the Trojan War by planning to use his and his mens’ skill to build and steer a giant wooden horse into the city and open the gates to the waiting
