The Super Nintendo against the Sega Genesis is a tough comparison because they are both very good video game consoles that offer a lot for people’s imagination. But when comparing the two there are differences and there are similarities that lead to very high competition. The two biggest similarities are the technology and the difficulty of the games. The one major difference between them is the games. The first similarity is that The Super Nintendo and the Genesis both came out at around the same time with the Genesis being released in 1989 and Super Nintendo being released in 1991.
Introduction: Standardized testing is often seen as a necessity when attempting to compare how much a student has grown education-wise throughout the year. Because of the pressure placed on students to do well on these tests, students often result in being immensely stressed and worried. This stress is felt by students around the world, but some countries apply extremely high amounts of pressure. In many Asian countries, students’ futures rely fully on the results of these tests which lead to instances of students taking alternate methods to cope with the pressure they face. This leads to the concern of how students in different countries manage to handle the onslaught of pressure which is brought on by their education.
It creates an obsession with test scores as a chief “accountably” metric for students, educators and schools. This system has led to the exams becoming an end instead of a means to an end. For instance, according the Joh Holt, within the learning environment “the air practically vibrates with suspicion and anxiety, the child learns to live in a daze, saving his energies for those small parts of his life that are too trivial for the adults to bother with, and thus remain his.” (E) This represents the crucial and harsh environment students experience when facing tests. It puts unnecessary stress on the minds of students and degrades their self worth into nothing.
Going Against the Standard According to Tim Walker, “Only 14% of parents say standardized testing is important in measuring school effectiveness” (Walker). A standardized test is a test that is given in a consistent or “standard” manner. Standardized tests are designed to have consistent questions, administration procedures, and scoring procedures. When a standardized test is administered, it is done so according to certain rules and specifications so that testing conditions are the same for all test takers. They often provide some type of “standard score” which can help interpret how far a child score ranges from the average student (Johnson).
Standardized tests have been historically used to measure how students compare with each other and how much of a particular curriculum they have learned. Increasingly, standardized tests are being used to make major decisions about students, such as grade promotion or high school graduation, and schools(Galegroup). Standardized testing is not an effective measurement of how capable and knowledgeable a student is due to it negatively impacting schools, its serious limitations, and its harm on student’s learning. The greater emphasis that has been placed on standardized testing in public schools has created a significant negative impact on the education system.
I am an eighth grade student at Keller Middle School. Today I would like to talk about my concern for standardized tests for students in the state of Texas. I understand the pros and con in having standardized testing, but I believe that the cons overpower the pros. My first concern would be about how much stress it brought upon kids, teens and teachers too. We study and practice all year for one test to show and prove everything that you know.

The average American student takes about 112 standardized tests between pre-kindergarten and 12th grade (Strauss). A standardized test is any form of test that requires the student to answer the same selection of common questions in a consistent matter, which makes it possible to compare relative student performance. Standardized tests restrict creativity, waste time, and waste money. We should get rid of standardized tests in our school system. Standardized tests limit a student’s ability to express creativity.
Standardized testing has become one of the most popular types of testing in U.S. public schools to date. Students take numerous standardized tests throughout their childhood schooling. (Studies show that a typical student takes an average of 112 mandated standardized tests between Pre-K and 12th grade.) While standardized testing is one of the main procedures that Universities use to judge incoming students, it is not proven to be the most effective way to convey a student’s actual intelligence level. The U.S. should not focus so heavily on standardized testing because it is not a complete accurate measurement of a student’s intelligence.
Tests can cause unnecessary stress on students, along with not giving a good picture of what a student is learning in their classes. Scoring low on one of these tests can also cause many problems involving students' mental health and their wellbeing, as the student may feel as if they are less equipped to take on educational challenges. Brain Galla, a psychology professor at the University of Pittsburgh, found that high school grades are actually more predictive of college graduation than standardized tests like the SAT or ACT (Tereda, 2022). Other researchers have found that standardized tests like the ones most high schools hand out have their flaws. Teachers may say “We need these test results so we can see what you’ve learned” but how many students are really showing all of their knowledge?
A standardized test, according to W. James Popham of ASCD.org, is “any examination that is administered and scored in a predetermined, standard manner.” In standardized testing, examinees are instructed to precisely answer a specific set of questions, which are usually multiple-choices. Although standardized testing is believed to be an objective method to grade students, administers should understand that these tests are not only a waste of time, but also a waste of money. Standardized testing is irrelevant to a student’s education because it is an unreliable way to measure a student’s knowledge, causes stress, and hinders a student’s overall learning potential.
