Gilgamesh and Amari Essay By Elizabeth Bullock, 605 Amari and the Night Brothers and Gilgamesh the Hero are similar in that both main characters have a dream that tells them something important to the plot, both main characters follow the archetype of the epic hero, and both main characters start out in a normal world. Amari in Amari and the Night Brothers and Gilgamesh in Gilgamesh the Hero both have a prophecy-like dream that tells them something important about their life ahead of them. This is a good tool that authors use to show that YOU ARE IN A FANTASY WORLD. Amari receives a “Wakeful Dream” from her brother Quinton, and Gilgamesh receives a message in his sleep from the Mesopotamian Gods. Both of them receive a dream from someone who seems mystical or distant, as the Gods hardly ever communicate with people, and Quinton had been missing for a while. Also, Amari’s dream shows her about a whole supernatural world hiding inside her own, one that Amari ends up being part of. Gilgamesh’s dream tells him he will get a close companion to help him on his journey, and later in the text, he meets Enkidu, who becomes his best friend. Both of these predictions come true later in the text, and end up influencing the plot and the lives of the characters forever …show more content…
This is a common plot and character developer that many epic and fantasy writers use. Amari is best friends with Elsie, and Gilgamesh is best friends with Enkidu. Both of these characters have a close relationship with mythical beings, as Elsie is a dragon and Enkidu is a man made of clay, and a wild man who lives among the animals. A close relationship with mythical creatures is in the epic hero archetype. Also, Amari travels to The Bureau with its technology and magic, while Gilgamesh travels to the Paradise Shore to see Utnapishtim. Both of these went to a different and mysterious place, a part of the archetype of the epic
