The Walking Dead and Macbeth
Philip Blake, or “The Governor”, from AMC”s The Walking Dead, and Macbeth, from WIlliam Shakespeare’s tragedy, Macbeth, share many similarities. Both characters get consumed by greed and lust for power, becoming obsessed with control, and ultimately paying the price both mentally and physically. Following him hearing a prophecy from 3 witches, Macbeth plots and goes through with a plan to kill his friend, a person who trusts him dearly, King Duncan. He does this in a successful attempt to become King of Scotland, this shows his lust for power, and willingness to do whatever it takes to acquire it, no matter how unthinkable. Fueled by anger from Macbeth killing his family, Macduff defeated Macbeth, brutally cutting his head off. Similarly, after getting control of Martinez’s group of survivors, Philip blake stupidly decided to attempt to attack Rick Grimes’ fortified settlement in a nearby prison. Philip convinced his new group of survivors that they were bad people, and with their help he kidnapped 2 of them, Hershel Greene and Michonne. Philip wanted the prison for himself, as it was the perfect place to protect him and his survivors from the zombies, but he did this largely out of his hatred for Rick and the others. He held Hershel and Michonne at gunpoint in front of the prison, bringing with him a tank aimed at the prison, reading to bring down hellfire. Philip ordered them to flee the prison, Rick declined. Philip then brutally cut off Hershel’s head, a man beloved by Rick and his survivors, this is comparable to Macbeth killing Macduff’s family. Hershel’s killing angered Rick into firing the first shots, and a bloodbath ensued. Rick and Philip got into a brutal fight, which ended with Rick shooting and killing Philip. This is directly comparable to Macbeth being killing by Macduff, as Rick Grimes and Macduff both killed their enemies, Philip Blake and Macbeth, fueled by anger from them killing people they cared
