Are there similarities between The Rule of One and Fahrenheit 451? There are many similarities between these two dystopian books, one of the main ones being the author’s use of power and control throughout both novels. In the dystopian books Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury and The Rule of One by Leslie and Audrey Saunders, both societies have harsh punishments for harmless actions. The world that Ava and Mira live in is similar to the world Guy Montag lives in, regarding the fact that in both societies the government punishes people who make decisions that society would consider normal. One example of this in Fahrenheit 451 is that they punish people for walking on the sidewalk instead of driving. Pedestrians could be sent to jail. Guy says to Clarisse, “It's fine work. Monday burn Millay, Wednesday Whitman, Friday Faulkner, burn em to ashes, then burn the ashes. That's our official slogan.” (Page 6) Guy is a firefighter whose job is to burn books and he finds it completely normal. He does not seem to find anything wrong with burning books. There are also examples of this in The Rule of One. In this novel, the citizens of Dallas, Texas are punished by not being able to access anything if they do not have a microchip. This seems odd because people now do not even have microchips and not even being able to buy food to provide for a family without one seems wrong. Mira is the second-born child and therefore does not have a microchip, “Without thinking, I touch my right wrist, where a microchip should be. A permanent reality of being the second born in a Rule of One America. I don't really exist.” (Page 3) Even if there is no direct government punishment for not having a microchip because everyone is just expected to have one, there is some psychological punishment.
