Isaiah 49: 14-15: From this text, we can learn that the community for whom this text was originally created was set in the mid to late 8th century BCE when the Jews were under threat from Assyria. John 13:1-20: From this text, we cannot learn much about the community, but we do know that it is the Johannine community and it is believed they were situated in Ephesus. The community is believed to be not fully made of Jewish followers, but a mixed group of those Jewish and those Gentile in heritage. Isaiah 49:14-15: God states “Can a woman forget her nursing child, or show no compassion for the child of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you.” This can be understood by the overall happenings in the book of Isaiah; Trito-Isaiah and the Jews return to Jerusalem after their lengthily exile in Babylon to rebuild the Temple, their religious identity and their national identity. But for this they needed reassurance from God that he will watch over them and keep them safe. John 13:1-20: During the festival of the Passover, Jesus acts on washing the disciples feet as if cleansing them from sin, then stating that “not all of you are clean” referring to the sin of betrayal of Judas.
