As the name implies, the French Revolution was a rebellion of the French people against their once aristocratic government. For too long its people had endured imposed hardships, but such a revolt could not have been orchestrated overnight. Like most significant events in our world’s history, there were various causes that led up to the French Revolution, some of which were the class system, the economy, and the American Revolution. One of the causes of the French Revolution was the lack of equality found in the class system. During this time, the nation of France was divided into three estates. The First Estate was the clergy, or church, the Second Estate were the nobles, and the Third Estate stood for the working class and the impoverished.
