In the 1930s more than 15 million American had no jobs. That is more than 20 percent of the U.S population at that time. The United States was in a bad situation called The Great Depression. There was a lot of poverty since the stock market crashed in 1929. Americans lost their money/savings.
Some might be wondering, what caused the Great Depression? Well, the Great Depression arrived in 1929. American citizens were out of work and didn’t want the government's “charity”. Stock market crashes, supply and demand, and contractions are some of the causes that can be found throughout the Depression.
As you may know, The Great Depression was one of the worst economic downturns in U.S. history. There are many debates on what caused The Great Depression some examples are, corporate leaders blame the depression on the result of a lack of business confidence in businessmen and how they were reluctant to invest because they feared the government regulations and high taxes. The Hoover administration blamed international economic forces therefore which should stabilize the currency and debt structure. New dealers argued that the depression was due to under consuming and that low wages and high prices had made it difficult to find a product of the international economy and that the lack of determination had led to economic collapse. But I also believe that the main factor of the Great Depression was the stock market crash of 1929.
The average income of the American family dropped 40 percent from 1929 to 1932. Income fell from $2,300 to $1,500 per year. People lost their jobs, struggled to provide for their families, and subsequently business failed. Just as people were optimistic about the overall state of America it took a turn for the worst. The great depression hit in the fall of 1929.
There were many factors that led up to the depression. First of all, banks were making loans that were never paid back. When the businesses that loans were made to ran short on money, similarly, the banks did too. Banks across America went bankrupt, causing them to close. Every account in the banks that closed was abandoned.
During the 20s, which became known at the Roaring 20s, American society was at an all time high and people were prospering as the nation’s wealth almost doubled and American was sent into the modern, consumer age. However following almost directly after the Roaring 20s, America entered a period of economic failure, also known as the Great Depression. During this period, the U.S faced economic, social, and political turmoil. The government and various individuals quickly sought after solutions to address the problems facing America during this time. Herbert Hoover, who was President at the start of the Depression, and his many reforms intended to revitalize the economy and create more jobs but would fail and his belief in rugged individualism
