THE GREAT DEPRESSION 1929 was the start of the deepest and darkest time for the United States Stock Market and the people of the United States. The Market crash, the loss of American jobs and homes, lead to one of the hardest downfalls in American history. Along with billions of dollars lost due to bad stock trading, over extending on personal credit and the spending of money that had yet to be produced. The American people never stood a chance and in a matter of 10 days the lives of almost everyone changed. In 1928 Herbert Hoover was elected as president.
In the 1930s more than 15 million American had no jobs. That is more than 20 percent of the U.S population at that time. The United States was in a bad situation called The Great Depression. There was a lot of poverty since the stock market crashed in 1929. Americans lost their money/savings.
The context of the great depression is world war 1 the great world was fought in europe leaving the us economy untouched this allowed the u.s to become a trading giant as they began to mass produce everything. After evaluating and weighing the evidence installment buying and the stock market crash were the major causes of the great depression. Before the great depression having debt was no longer shameful because of this people kept buying and buying, 3 out of 4 radios were on installment plans and 60 percent of automobiles and furniture were also on plans. They were buying faster than their income was expanding. As time went on it was only a matter of time before purchases would slow down, with these purchases slowing down the cutback slapped the whole economy (doc 6).
The Great Depression was the worst economic downturn in the history of the world. It began in the United States when the stock market crashed in October 1929. Everybody was sent into a panic and millions of investors were wiped out. Unemployment levels began to rise after consumer spending and investment dropped, while stock prices continued to increase. Companies started to lay off their workers, and soon nearly thirteen to fifteen million people in America were without jobs.
The Great Depression was an economic crisis that took place all over the world during 1929-1939. America and other nations were not prepared nor expecting this. Before it hit, stocks were high, businesses were thriving, and jobs were full. This event made the Roaring Twenties turn into one of darkest times in American history. The Great Depression was mostly caused by speculation/installment buying, banking, and unemployment.
The average income of the American family dropped 40 percent from 1929 to 1932. Income fell from $2,300 to $1,500 per year. People lost their jobs, struggled to provide for their families, and subsequently business failed. Just as people were optimistic about the overall state of America it took a turn for the worst. The great depression hit in the fall of 1929.
The Great Depression was a complex event caused by a variety of factors. The six factors of the Run on the Banks, the Stock Market crash, the uneven distribution of wealth, problems for business and industry, problems for farmers, and the overuse of credit all played a role in the start of the Great Depression. All of these factors were an important factor in helping start the Great Depression. However, the overuse of credit was the most important factor of them all because it led to people relying on loans, too many payments for the consumer to adequately keep up with, and the economy eventually drying up once the influx of money stopped.
Over 5,000 banks closed. There were massive layoffs, unemployment rate reached 25%, and industrial production fell by 50%. Cotton fell to 5 cent a pound and tobacco fell to 8 cent. Many people were homeless and there was child labor. Franklin Delano Roosevelt is Dutch and from an aristocratic family.
The Great Depression was the worst economic crisis our country had ever seen. The American government was unprepared for what would happen to the country after the stock market crashed in 1929, and because of this, many people lost everything they had and became in debt. Once Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected, he worked hard at putting a plan in place to prevent anything like this from ever recurring. The Great Depression left people with next to nothing after the stock market crashed, causing investors to lose everything and optimism disappeared, which resulted in laws to prevent it from happening again.
The Great Depression was a time of economic destress in the United States that eventually affected the whole world. The stock market crashed causing chaos among the people. Everywhere people were going to banks demanding they get their money back. However, these banks were not prepared for this and did not have the money to give back. As banks began to fail, business failed as well.
Over the next several years, consumer spending and investment dropped which caused steep declines in industrial output and rising levels of unemployment as failing companies laid off workers. The Great Depression of the 1930s was one of the greatest factors that led the U.S. to its involvement with World War II. This was America’s most substantial economic crisis in history. During this time, more than a fourth of the workforce was unemployed. America’s entry to the war brought an end to this seemingly never ending plight for citizens.
America had experienced other depressions or “panics,” but none were like the Great Depression. The Great Depression began on October 29, 1929, Black Tuesday, with the stock market crashing. Most people believe that the cause of the Great Depression was the stock market crashing. Although that is what triggered the Great Depression there were many underlying causes that lead up to the stock market crashing. Some of the underlying causes include under-consumption/over-production, uneven distribution of wealth, loose banking and corporate regulations, tariffs policies, and the stock market.
In 1929, the U.S. was hit with the worst economic crisis in the history of the country, the Great Depression. The Great Depression left millions of people unemployed and cost millions their life's savings. The Depression lasted for ten long years for the American people. Since the Great Depression ended, people have studied it, trying to figure out what happened that started it all. The problem was, in fact, the poor economic habits of the people at the time, such as speculation, income maldistribution, and overproduction.
