Coyotito is an important symbol in The Pearl. At the beginning at the book Juana’s and Kino’s most important position is Coyotito. When Coyotito was stung by the scorpion Juana said "The doctor, go to get the doctor.” She knew that the doctor wouldn’t come but still she had asked. Once she was told by Kino and the others that the doctor wouldn’t come she said "Then we will go to him,", and with one hand she arranged her dark blue shawl over her head and made of one end of it a sling to hold the moaning baby and made of the other end of it a shade over his eyes to protect him from the light. They would protect Coyotito from darkness and evil. When Kino had let out a big cry it wasn’t from the pearl it was from when Juana went to Coyotito where he lay on his father's blanket. The pearl becomes Kino’s soul and Coyotito becoming forgot. She paused for a moment beside the hanging box where Coyotito lay, then for a second she was black in the doorway, and then she was gone. And rage surged in Kino. He rolled up to his feet and followed her as silently as she had gone.When Juana sneaks out of the house to dispose of the pearl Kino goes after her and leaves coyotito alone in the house because of this he is exposed and more at risk of being killed. When Kino and Juana try to escape to the capitol, they are being tracked by trackers. Kino planned to jump them and kill them, so they wouldn’t be followed any more."When they go up," he said, "we will slip away, down to the lowlands again. I am afraid only that the baby may cry. You must see that he does not cry." Kino had been more concern not being killed or laugh but of Coyotito crying and blowing his cover. After this Coyotito becomes forgotten but then Kino and Juana realize sometime very
