In the the Pearl there were five murders in total within paragraphs 5 and 6. The first was after he beat up Juana for trying to throw the pearl back into the ocean where it belonged, a tall shadowy figure jumped him to get the pearl but kino was the one with the knife. The next three were of the trackers who’ve been following them out of town, after Kino killed the first man. And the last was Coyotito right after Kino killed the last man when he tried to run away. The first murder in the story shows that he has truly changed into someone totally different, it shows us, the readers, his family will never be the same again. On page 59 the text says, “In that instant Juana knew that the old life was gone forever. A dead man in the path and Kino's knife dark bladed beside him, convinced her” This quote is describing how the pearl took kino’s old life and took his best and created it to be his worst. The people he killed were going to kill them or at the least hurt them to get the pearl, so he constructed the plan to basically make it out alive. It says on page 80 “... I must get to him first, then I will be all right...There is no choice, it is the only way. They will find us in the morning.” As he made his plan he refused to let Juana change his mind even if it did mean life or death.
