The film on Connie Hanes shows how inmates are treated inn prison and how it can drive them to commit suicide. Even before Connie Hanes verdict she was treated like a prisoner. While in court she was bare foot and not allowed to wear her own clothes, they made her wear a cotton jail dress. In addition, it was in January in the didn’t allow her to have a coat. Connie describes her attorney as believing she was guilty of the crime and “they weren’t going to waste a lot of time” because “ it was a cut and dry case” and the judge and juror are going to believe she is guilty.
For the metaphor the most important was “Ahead of you lies a long road paved with suffering”(Wiesel,41). One of the guards used this metaphor to tell the prisoners how truly awful their time in camp will be, infinite and very painful. Lastly, the most significant hyperbole was “We went off to work as usual, our bodies frozen”(Wiesel,78). Of course, there bodies weren’t actually frozen, but they might as well be. The conditions in the camp were so poor that they had little to no ways to keep themselves warm in the winter, which is portrayed in this hyperbole.
Likewise, the death marches exemplifies the conditions that the inmates are familiar to. The author experiences comrades giving up and dying, knowing that dying is a better outcome than the actions present. When running during the death march, Elie Wiesel starts to ponder about “the idea of dying” because he is so tired and no longer cares about any human existence, including himself, because of the brutality he witnesses while on the death march; wanting to be like so many of his comrades. (Wiesel 86). The sheer number of casualties that each captive bear witness to creates the feeling that all emotions are devoid.
The reader may feel the injustice that the soldier in Purgatory is suffering over as well as the rest of the veterans that are in a similar predicament. The man awaiting his death started to go insane. He was physically handicapped by the rope tied around him (Great Books). This short story exposed the true anxiety and emotional stress of death. In the book, Dead Man Walking by Sister Helen Prejean who grew up in Louisiana and had gone through a spiritual transformation and pursued in social justice. To pursue in social justice she moved to St. Thomas housing projects in New Orleans where she observe the discrimination between black and white on crimes. She wrote about her journey as she is asked to become a pen pal for a death row inmate in a murder case by a friend from Coalition Prison. Patrick Sonnier was convicted for raping and murdering a young couple, David Leblanc and Loretta Bourque with his younger brother Eddie who received life in prison. Sister Helen explained that if a black person is killed it would barely make it to the newspaper but, if a white person is killed it would be a front page story.
Throughout the novel Harper Lee uses symbolism of many things to strengthen the theme of social inequality. The title of the book is the most obvious use of symbolism.
