Hypothesis Any child who is pushed by their parents to succeed at only one area of their life will not be able to cope when they are no longer considered the best in their field. Initial Hypothesis Parents want their children to succeed at life, and have a better life than they had. There are however instances where wanting the child to succeed is taken too far, and it can lead to complications with the child’s mental health. These cases are becoming more common as the previous generation (the generation who is raising the millennials) does not want to accept that the world is not like what it was when they were young. Before the 20th century, children were not allowed to be children. They were seen as a means of free labor, and a means by which the parents could mold the child into a perfect specimen. The inherent problem with this is that children are no longer allowed to be children. They were not allowed to play and imagine things, because they had to work. It was only in the twentieth century with the passing of labor laws that children were allowed to do what they wanted with their free time. However there has been a growing trend amongst the newer generation where parents are “helicopter parenting” their child. What this involves is a parent obsessively organizing and making their child focus on one thing leaving little time to play. Children who are affected by this type of parents will see that their parents describe them as gifted. This puts untold amount of pressure on the child. This pressure involves the child never feeling like they will be good enough for their parents, so they try harder. Creating this viscious circle will only damage the child in the long
