What do you think the different colors in the book symbolizes.
All throughout the book, Golding uses the color pink to describe multiple things on the island. The first parts of the book use pink to describe rocks: “...till the pinkness became a stack of balanced rock projecting through the looped fantasy of the forest creepers. Where the pink cliffs rose out of the ground…” (Golding 26). Pink symbolizes innocence and youth, which describes the boys when they first got to the island. Later, near the end of the book, the author explains, “[Ralph] had even glimpsed one of [the savages], striped brown, black, and red, and had judged that it was Bill. But really, thought Ralph, this was not Bill” (Golding 183). Black, red, and brown represent the wildness and corruption of the boys after spending a long time on the island. Roger goes from a bully to a murderer throughout this book. Near the beginning, he doesn’t dare to hurt anyone because “invisible but strong, was the taboo of the old life. Round the squatting child was the protection of parents and school and policemen and the law”(Golding 62). Later, his behavior was explained to be limited by “a civilization that knew nothing of him and was in ruins”(Golding 62). At the conclusion of the book, Roger becomes the biggest savage in the group of boys. He shows his true nature when he released the rock that killed Piggy: “High overhead, Roger, with a sense of delirious abandonment, leaned all his weight on the lever”(Golding 180). He truly lost all ties to society and lost all self-control.
