Stepping into a bookstore excites me. I see rows of books calling out to me, and I answer as my fingertips brush the hardcovers and paperbacks. My eyes roam up and down the colorful bookcases as several details catch my attention. The cover art of one book looks so intriguing, but the title of the other sounds thrilling. How will I ever choose which one to buy?
All good pieces of fiction use literary elements to create a riveting story. Short stories such as “Ashes” by Susan Pfeffer and “Abuela Invents the Zero” by Judith Ortiz Cofer use literary elements to help progress the story. “Ashes” is a story about a young girl named Ashes who is forced to choose between her two divorced parents. “Abuela Invents the Zero” is about a teenager who doesn’t want to be associated with her grandma, and therefore makes her feel worthless. The elements of literature such as POV, conflict, and symbols allows the reader to get engaged with the story.

In Salvage the Bones, Jesmyn Ward parallels the mythological story of Medea in order to highlight her representation of women. The use of Medea, who is embodied in various aspects within the three main female characters, allows Ward’s work to obtain a sense of universality to her narrative. Also with this incorporation, Ward is able to change the dominant perspective of “blackness” that has plagued southern literature written by African-American authors. Salvage the Bones occurs in Bois Sauvage, Mississippi, following Esch,who has just found out she is pregnant, and her poor family just days before the catastrophic Hurricane Katrina. Medea, an anti-hero, who succumbs to her own decisions and the demons of love represents a dynamic femininity, rather than the stereotypical aspect of which is what being a female is.

My whole life I struggled to understand what made reading enjoyable to people. I struggled to focus on the ideas of books. It wasn't until about a year ago I was given a book to borrow from a friend. I saw this friend as a mentor in my life and she felt I needed to read this book. I put off reading the book as long as possible but when I finally started progressing through the book my opinion had been altered.
It takes up less time than watching an hour long movie. But maybe shorter isn’t better. Maybe the reader wants to know more but the book doesn’t have nearly as much details as the movie. At this point is seems to be 50/50. If you asked a regular class of students,
