Santiago’s journey isn't just about finding treasure, but also about growing in the world. In the parable, The Alchemist, a shepherd goes on a journey to find a treasure in the pyramids. While on this journey, he meets people who allow him to see the world and understand the lessons it is trying to teach him. Once he reaches the pyramids he realizes the gold is back at the church where he started but the true treasure was in the journey to find his Personal Legend. During his adventure, he meets divine and natural mentors that help him find his treasure and Personal Legend. This allows Santiago to be determined to find his personal legend despite the obstacles. Also, he meets the alchemist close to the end of his journey when he is close to giving up and staying in the desert with the love of his life. But, the alchemist convinces Santiago to finish his adventure. He teaches him that, “love never keeps a man from pursuing his personal legend Personal Legend” and if he stayed for love then the love wasn't true (Coelho 124). This teaches him that true love should never hold you back, but be your motivation to move forward. Their lessons and advice teaches Santiago that he should never give up on his dream or finding his personal legend and it might be hard now but in the end it will be worth it. Santiago also has natural mentors like the sunrise, wind, dreams and the desert. These mentors teach him lessons not through words but through nature and experiences. The sunrises teach him that he “couldn’t have found God in the seminary” and he has to explore the world to really understand God's teachings (Coelho 13).
