Authors use symbols as a way to connect with their readers. Quite often these symbols relate to integral meanings throughout the novel and develop themes. One way authors use symbols comes in the form of colors. Different colors connotate different meanings. For example, pink is a great way to demonstrate innocence and purity. William Golding in his novel relates this change in innocence well, when he writes the unitive of children who land on an island starts to dissipate. He displays well the change in behavior and mentality in his novel, The Lord of the Flies. Because of Golding’s use of imagery through colors, we better understand the change of innocence throughout the novel. The childrens behavior continues to transmute into many different courses throughout Lord of the flies. One way we can identify, takes place with the color pink. We see the color pink many times in the start of the novel when landing on a deserted island from the scourge of the plane crash. “Like icing,” said Ralph, “on a pink cake.” (Golding 25). The boys had explored the island, and we hear Ralph describe the characteristics. Their emotions only contained curiosity, and fear. "acres of black and yellow smoke rolled steadily toward the sea" (Golding 44) The boys revealed their cerebral side as they started exploring ways to live on the island. The color yellow represents sage or intelligence. The boys made a fire using only their intelligence, and resources. Black, foreshadowed the turn of events it would soon take. The color black represents evil and death. The use of light and dark colors are used schemingly throughout the novel in the interim we read through the narrative. The light colors are primarily throughout the beginning, and the dark color transitions from slight start through to the climax of the color
