The book Lord of the Flies had many examples of symbolism. The author of the book, William Golding, used kids on an uninhabited island to represent the fall of mankind and kept the story parallel to the bible and real life. Golding showed symbolism through Piggy, the conch, the scar, Jack, Simon, the beastie, and the scar all to Biblical stories. The first use of symbolism was Piggy and his glasses. “Piggy’s character represented intelligence and the fall of humanity”(Golding). Piggy’s glasses also represent intelligence and were the only way the children lit the fire. The second character that was great symbolism and significance in the story was Simon. The conch was first found on the beach by Ralph and Piggy, and once the two found the conch they made a rule once whoever blew it and everyone gathered around that whomever had control of the conch was in control to speak. However, during the book in the later meetings they assembled it showed how the kids lost respect for the conch by not listening to whomever had the conch by interrupting them. One of the main ones that the author mentioned quite a bit in the beginning was the scar from the plane crash. The scar on the island represents man’s destruction throughout the island. The second one was the beastie on the island which was spotted by the littlun with the giant birthmark on his face. The beastie was not an actual animal or monster, but it actually symbolized the evil that was growing in each one of the kids. The island represented the Garden of Eden in the Bible with all kinds of beautiful, green, and luscious trees that grow there and produce rich fruit (Genesis 2.9). Later in the story, once Jack became a savage he went hunting with his hunters, and they found a pig and killed it. Once they murdered the pig in a very gruesome, savage way Jack ordered his men to sharpen a stick and stick it into the ground and stick the pigs head onto it. The flies began to circle the pig, so the pig was a symbol of the demon on the island even though it was really not a demon. the demon on the island were the kids and how their personalities were
