One topic the book “Bless Me Ultima” by Rudolfo Anaya talks about is the loss of childhood innocence. Antonio being so young hasn't had many encounters with problems in the world. Children are considered pure because of this. The book takes place in New Mexico, in the 1940’s. The story is based off Antonio Marez.
In this dream, we see antonio break free from his destiny and become his own man. In the dream on chapter 22, in Bless Me Ultima, Anaya uses foreshadowing, juxtaposition, and symbolism to illustrate Antonio becoming less dependent on others to guide him, which leads to him forsaking his parents’ expectations and molding his own path in life. Anaya feels this change in Antonio is a positive pivotal step in growing up.
Antonio has been given choices in life and it's up to destiny to decide what he is going to do. Bless Me Ultima, written by Rudolfo Anaya is a coming of age novel. A little boy named Antonio has two completely different parents, they have different cultures and want different thing for Antonio. Antonio's parents fight about his destiny when Ultima, a magical person, comes to live with them for the summer. He starts to get interested with the magical world.

The owl being symbol of wisdom. She falls asleep and dreams about the Doe coming to her, feeling the wound and picturing the blood gushing out of it. This horrifies her and she could smell the blood when she woke up next morning. This blood can be seen as a reference to menstruation, which is something Andrea must go through in the transition into teenage.
Always have the strength to live. Love life, and if despair enters your heart, look for me in the evening when the wind is gentle and the owls sing in the hills. I shall be with you--” (ch. pg. ). Ultima says to Antonio that he must develop his own value system and to define his own identity.
This literary technique equally contributes to the concept of magical realism. Specifically when Ultima is near death, and explains, “When I was a child,” she whispered, “I was taught my life’s work by a wise old man, a good man. He gave me the owl and he said that the owl was my spirit, my bond to the time and harmony of the universe. ”(262) The foreshadowing from the owls death, also gives a reason for Ultima’s death.
This hints the reader of some connection between the owl and Ultima from their protective natures, especially for Antonio. Antonio rushes to Ultima and discovers her in her dying throes, she says, “When I was a child… I was taught my life's work by a wise old man, a good man. He gave me the owl and he said that the owl was my spirit” (260). This finally gives proof to the reader that Ultima’s spirit was the owl. Within the novel there is a major cultural conflict that the protagonist, Antonio, faces from the beginning to the end of the book. As a reader of Bless Me Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya, it is obvious that Antonio, the protagonist, is presented with two paths. His mother who is a Catholic wants him to become a priest, and in contrast, Ultima, who believes in Curanderismo is pushing him to choose his own path. The setting of this novel takes place in Albuquerque, New Mexico preceding the 1970s. With this type of background a reader can grasp the difficulty that Antonio has with his identity throughout the novel.
