The Song of Roland is about a constant battle between the Saracens and the Franks. The Saracens, Spain, was ruled by Marsilla and represents the Muslims while the Franks, France, was ruled by Charlemagne and represents the Christians. The most important characters, whom the battle depends on them, are Roland, Ganelon, Charlemagne, and Oliver. All of them are part of the Franks group but have some characteristics which stand out from the other soldiers. Roland is Charlemagne’s trusted and reliable man. He is a great soldier and is always there to help his people. Is recognized for his ability to conquered enormous lands and the importance of his presence in battles. It is said that if he dies, no one would have the motivation to fight. He is basically one of the most important soldiers that the Franks have and can represent a supreme heroic ideal. Was admired for his great battle skills and how loyal he was to his people. His death is one of the most important and unbelievable events because of his popularity. Being part of the Frank group, he committed a very unpredictable act and was considered a traitor to them. Both groups were tired of fighting so they decided to make a peace agreement. To achieve this, the Franks had to send one of his soldiers to finally tell them that everything was over. When Ganelon, selected to go, got to Spain he decided to betray his people. He helps the Saracens to plan an attack and told them how they could achieve it. Ganelon decided to do this because he and Roland have never had a good relationship. He was jealous of him and thought that Roland sends him to Spain as an opportunity for him to die. He basically betrays his people, country, and king just to take revenge on
