Throughout chapter 5, the weather is shown to symbolize Gatsby’s emotions. In the beginning of the chapter, Gatsby is shown to be nervous and sad: “He sat down miserably, as if I had pushed him... “ (Fitzgerald 85). At this same time “[t]he rain cooled about half-past three to a damp mist, through which occasional thin drops swam like dew” (Fitzgerald 85).
