Could you ever imagine being locked up in an 11’ by 11’ room for seven years? In the novel “Room” that is what “Ma” had to do. Ma, who is the mother of “Jack”, was kidnapped when she was just nineteen years old, by a man know as “Old Nick” and then held hostage in “Room” for seven long years. Jack was born in “Room” and lived there his entire life knows no other place, but for Ma Room was like Alcatraz. Jack slept in Wardrobe, and was often woken up to the sound of Old Nick making creaky noises in bed with ma. Jack’s daily routine includes eating three meals, learning, playing, bathing, and of course just like any five-year-old boy watching a little television. After Ma found out that Old Nick had lost his job, she was afraid Old Nick wouldn’t be able to afford food for her and Jack and that they would starve to death, so Ma decided that is was finally time to escape. Ma concocted an elaborate plan where Jack will pretend to be dead, and when Old Nick rolls him up in a rug to transport him far away so he could be buried he would escape.
