What if it was your fault twenty people were killed? In the Crucible, a play about the Salem Witch Trials, Abigail Williams, one of the main characters, adulterated the town of Salem. She caused the deaths of many. The play’s setting is Salem, Massachusetts in the 1600’s. Abigail Williams falsely accuses many people of confiding with the devil. She even has a group of girls that follow along and help her in her act. Her flaws of immorality, manipulation, and selfishness have led her to her ultimate downfall of becoming a prostitute.
Abigail Williams had an affair with John Proctor. She is a teenager and John Proctor is a married man. In Act 1, Abigail Williams says, “You loved me, John Proctor, and whatever sin it is, you love me yet! John, pity me, pity me” (Act 1)! This quote is said when Abigail is confronting John about his love for her- which has died. John realized he messed up and still loves his wife, Elizabeth. When Abigail realizes John no longer loves her, she is going to start targeting his wife, along with others in the town of Salem. As she accuses people, her followers help in the act. These girls helped Abigail accuse people because they were scared of what she would do to them. In the play, Abigail accuses many people of making a deal with the devil.
