Throughout history, authors have had a tendency to write characters that can follow general roles, called archetypes. Examples of archetypes are the hero, the trickster, the temptress, the villain, the innocent and the faithful companion. In Arthur Miller's classic play, The Crucible, the character Abigail Williams fills the role of the villain. One example of Abigail's villainy is the scene where her cousin, Betty Parris yells about Abigail having drank blood in the forest. When Abby tries to tell her to never say that, Betty replies by saying, "You did, you did!
Miller’s use of symbolism and imagery, reveals the true love Circe had towards Glaucous and how Circe trusts too easily. When Glaucous awoke from undergoing the changes that turned him into a god, she hid the truth from him that it was her who gave him immortality. According to Miller, “I loved his face in those moments, glowing with power and joy” (Miller 50-51). Miller’s use of imagery, helps to convey the idea how much Circe loved Glaucous and how she trusted too easily. Even before Glaucous was turned into a god Circe truly loved him.
The dynamic of a test including oneself is an apparent theme within The Crucible. Characters throughout the play show their inner turmoil in a prominent or a subtle way. On the other hand, another definition of a crucible is a bowl, which items placed within the bowl and are grounded up and purified. The interactions with the characters can mean that they are testing themselves in this life since they believe in the afterlife, and in the process are putting an effort to be pure to their Christian faith. A character that relates to this ideology is none other than John Proctor; at the beginning of the play, it is revealed that he had an affair with Abigail.
In The Crucible, by Arthur Miller, Miller uses one of his main characters, Abigail, to cause fear among the townspeople due to witchcraft. Abigail takes advantage of everyone's fear, and gets the townspeople to turn against each other or to take her side, however in the end the results are disastrous as 19 people are left dead and many remain in prison due to the accusations. Arthur Miller does this to demonstrate to his audience the dangers of using fear to motivate an audience to confront a threat. On the other hand, Franklin D. Roosevelt uses the Pearl Harbor incident to cause fear among his audience. Roosevelt uses his audience's fear of being attacked unexpectedly, like the Pearl Harbor incident, in hope to persuade them to support the war and volunteer to go to war, and the result left over 100,000 military personnel dead at the end of the war.
Of the themes propagating The Crucible, three are prevalent among others. These are Authority vs. Individual Freedom, Abuse of Power, and the Search for self, or internal struggle. Abuse of power is probably the most extensively used theme amongst those three mentioned. Take for example a rather simple conversation between Proctor and Parris, where Proctor implores Parris, “Can you speak one minute without we land in Hell again? I am sick of Hell!”
Authority is the most important theme because throughout the play the judge is the chosen one as they believed because the way they think is that god chooses the right one, Judge Danforth is the protector of Salem he is the one that sentences and executes men,women, and kids. The way they do it in salem is corroborative because the judge is relied on what the victims says and they don’t always tell the truth so it’s bad on the behalf of the suspect even if they haven’t did anything. As far as authority goes in Salem it all really depends on the main man the judge to condemn one’s life good or bad, the people of Salem is kinda like today’s people because people like to change the words of some things depending on the person they are talking

This is what many people in the town of Salem had to go through during the time of the Salem Witch Trials. People's motives such as: gaining and maintaining power, and aspirations for what other people had caused them to make irrational, and atrocious decisions. In The Crucible by Arthur Miller, desire and power drive characters to create chaos in the community.
A major theme in The Crucible is the deception of falsehood and honesty. A character that is a prime example is Abigail Williams. Through the book Abigail shows several layers of lies and deception to protect herself. Abigail has a rather tough life because both of her parents died when she was young and ever since she has worked as a servant in several households. Abigail has a strong hold on several people throughout the story which is why she has so much power over the town of Salem.
Imagine living a life full of lies, lying every day and eventually the lies that are being told become so realistic they end up turning into the reality. In the play “The Crucible” written by Arthur Miller, the entire town of Salem, Massachusetts revolves around one lie after another. The lies initially begin after the reverend at Salem’s church, Reverend Parris, catches his daughter, niece, and several other young girls dancing in the forest. After Reverend Parris confronts his niece, Abigail, she refuses to tell him that they were doing any sort of witchcraft in the forest. Abigail, of course, was not telling the truth and eventually she could not hide that any longer.
I am discussing how the Theme of revenge in The Crucible make it both universal and enduring. There is a lot of different ways that revenge is expressed in The Crucible. Every time the girls pretended to be taken over by spirits, or see someone send out their spirit to harm the girls and call out witch on an innocent man or woman because they wanted attention or had a grudge they were holding against someone who had wronged them or they just didn’t like. Just as Abbigail having a grudge against Elisabeth Proctor for being Johns Proctors wife. Abbigail still loved John after their affair they had together and John wouldn’t be with her any longer.
