Many are taught, as children, and even as adults, to choose a hero—someone to venerate and to emulate. To choose someone with qualities that one would like to see in oneself, and one would like to be someday. The problem with this conception of a hero is that it is an altogether gender biased, racist, and bigoted ideology, and this idea is especially prevalent in American literature.
