Aligning with the explore phase of the 5E model this lesson challenges students’ misconception of salt being beneficial to plants through a teacher-guided hands-on investigation with observational data collected over the proceeding week (Skamp & Preston, 2017). Curiosity is provoked with thoughtful and varied student responses which highlight prior knowledge and misconceptions of plant survival needs are elicted with the teacher question ‘How can we discover how much salt plants can tolerate?’ This answer is not provided by the teacher which allows students to construct understanding during the investigation (Murdoch, 2015). The lesson is appropriate for Year 6 students as they are cognitively moving from the concrete operations stage …show more content…

The ‘salinity in plants investigation planner’ was influenced by the POE method and is used for students to predict, observe and explain results in one document. Prior to conducting the investigation students predict which plants will be affected by the saltwater and why this may occur. This predication motivates students to carefully observe the plants during the investigation to develop their understanding (Joyce, 2006). Students make their first observation at the end of the lesson and continue to make careful observations in the following days as they are watered. The last observation and explain stage will be finalised in the following science …show more content…

Consequently, as teachers have a duty of care for students they are liable for negligence if a student is injured whilst under their supervision. During this lesson risk of injury is minimised by students wearing gloves when handling potting mix and wiping up any water spills immediately. Furthermore, the Supporting health and wellbeing policy statement (Education Queensland, 2018) states that a positive, respectful and caring learning environment is provided for all. Personal development of students is considered by providing an age-appropriate inquiry and social development through working in collaborative science
