The Lord of the rings by J.R.R Tolkien is an epic tale because it exhibits courage, heroism and even has universal themes such as a good and bad side. Frodo and the hobbit’s all show great heroism throughout the story. The book also portrays a good and bad side. In The Lord of the rings, Frodo and the hobbits all show courage throughout their journey. Frodo shows many acts of courage as the story progresses. For one instance Frodo shows a tremendous amount of courage when he saves the hobbits and Glorifindel from the black riders. “No I will not ride, and leave my friends in danger. Glorifindel smiled. I doubt very much your friends would be in danger if you were not with them. The pursuit would follow you and leave us in peace.” (Tolkien 211) Frodo shows a great amount of courage here because he risks his own life to save his friends. The hobbits show several different acts of heroism throughout their journey but the most significant time was when Sam had saved Frodo, Merry, and Pippin all from the willow in the Old Forest. “Sam gripped Frodo by the jacket and dragged him out from under the root.” (Tolkien 117) If it had not have been for Sam’s heroic act Frodo, Merry, and Pippin would’ve all been strangled to death by the old willow.
