Working as a personal telegrapher he came up with two ideas to help make the railroads more efficient and these two ideas were the most successful ideas. In 1859, he was promoted to Pennsylvania railroad superintendent. In 1861, Carnegie started the freedom iron company. Since the railroads were getting destroyed in war and deteriorating over time the iron business allowed him to bring in a lot of money since he was the biggest iron maker. In 1865, Andrew changed paths and sold the freedom iron company to make the keystone bridge company, this was revolutionary because this is when bridges started being built with iron instead of wood.
Haley Farrell 8/7/14 AP U.S History Summer Assignment • Andrew Carnegie was an industrialist who influenced the enlargement of the American steel industry in the conclusion of the 19th century. In his era, he was one of the most well-known philanthropists who had also given most of his wealth to charities and foundations. Carnegie believed that those who are wealthy should distribute their riches to work towards amelioration of society and to reduce the gap between socioeconomic statuses, which he expressed in an article called “The Gospel of Wealth” in 1889. Andrew gained his fortune by investing in railroads and bridges in the 1860’s and then later became a bond salesman in which he worked to elevate American enterprise in European countries.
Since he asked his mentor Tom Scott for help he made about $21 million dollars. With the money, he created his own and first steel plant. Carnegie was a good investor, his mill was one of the largest in the country. Carnegie is able to supply as much steel as the nation may need and become very wealthy. Around the 20th century, America was growing very fast with the rail, oil and steel making.

Andrew Carnegie's parents were poor immigrants from Scotland and began to work their way up to be business leaders. Carnegie built the largest steel company and created a monopoly.
Carnegie dominated his industry inside and out. He owned everything from the production of the raw materials, the manufacturing of the products, the transportations of the products, and even the sales to the consumers. This allowed him to cut his losses and gain as much of a product as possible. Eventually, Carnegie was able to buy out competing companies and, in effect, soar to unfathomable economic heights. After becoming such an industrial "power house," Carnegie found himself associated with unfit terms like 'monopoly' and "Robber Baron."
The steel tycoon Andrew Carnegie started out from a humbling beginning as poor immigrate working his way up the corporate ladder (). Until the day came when Andrew Carnegie decided he would strike out on his own, and Carnegie Steel was born. Now, Carnegie new that his steel mills most valuable assets was the workers. Consequently, Carnegie encouraged the workers to participate in collective bargaining for wages (). As a result, the factory workers were able to bargain their way to a truly livable wage.

The industrialist and hard-working Andrew Carnegie was a very successful businessman and philanthropist. Andrew Carnegie provided the United States economy to rise due to his steel production in the 1800’s and 1900’s. Although some may think Carnegie was a brutal businessman, Andrew Carnegie enhanced the United States due to his business investments, his philanthropy, and his educational institutions. One way Andrew Carnegie enhanced The United States is his business investments.
Andrew Carnegie, captain of industry or a robber baron? The answer is surprisingly basic. Carnegie was a captain of industry and this is obvious, between his come up to his passing it creates a clear picture of a man who wanted to advance society. Now I won't discredit the fact that some may see him as a robber baron due to his ruthlessness in the field of business or how he didn't give enough pay to his workers, but if you think about it just a little bit he was a businessman meaning he had to make decisions that at the end of the day benefitted him and his business. I have 3 main points as to why he was a captain of industry.
He was also one the wealthiest men of his time and helped transform the steel industry. Andrew Carnegie could be considered to be a hero in many ways. He helped create jobs, transformed the steel industry and also helped other industries, and was an influential philanthropist. Many of the people at the time were poor and living in poverty. There weren't many jobs; and the one that they did have didn't pay enough to sustain a family.
Andrew Carnegie had a significant effect on the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution is the development of factories and the mass production of consumer goods, in this case, Carnigies steel. The Industrial Revolution set the economic foundation that allowed Andrew Carnegie to construct his monopoly called Carnegie Steel. Some argue that Andrew Carnegie was a Robber Barron because he didn’t do anything about the dangerous work conditions but the evidence supports that he was a captain of industry because he was a philanthropist and rose from a rags-to-riches storyline. Andrew Carnegie had such a powerful influence on the world and his steel-making establishment is still around today.
During the late 1800’s, early 1900’s America began the famous industrial race to success. At the head of the race, yearning for success, was Andrew Carnegie. Scotland born in 1835, Carnegie moved to the United States with nothing but soon grew with prosperous steps, speeding his way to the top as a profitable business man through the steel industry. His path to success may be filled with some hardship of distrust and mishaps with money hungry co-workers, but in the end he created, with his infinite wealth, enormous amounts of buildings and educational centers to benefit mankind in the long run. This is a deed of a kind man.

Andrew Carnegie was one of the most famous and wealthiest American industrialist during the Industrial Age. He was a robber baron who made a fortune in the steel industry and applied vertical integration to his business. Carnegie contradicted his views as a robber baron because he supported, but destroyed many unions. This made many of his views unethical.
