Andrew Carnegie Essay If I told you Andrew Carnegie was two-faced, would you believe me? He is the all powerful, self-made hero right? Well this “hero” was born in November 1835, in a Scotland settlement, living in the attic of a small cottage. He attended a one-room school with 150 people crammed into it. He then started his first job, having his career take off he earned more than $100,000 in the middle of his life. Was Carnegie a hero or a villain? Andrew was a hero in business and philanthropy, but not with labor in many eyes. Carnegie was an American hero in the eyes of people who did not face the challenges of his labor. Workers at Andrew’s industry earned no more than $1.90 while he received over one-hundred thousand dollars.(Doc 7) This show us that Carnegie had withheld money from his employers who were the ones doing all the hard work. Jobs at Carnegie company exhausted workers because of their 10 hour shifts that consisted of hot machinery and the smell of gas. If you added up all the money he gave away, Carnegie would have given a total of $350,695,653 to charities,small industries, and other important events.(Doc 9) He cared very much for the unfortunate and wanted to give back to those who lived lives like his. He also helped improved education. Andrew also helped drive the cost of steel, making its affordable for Americans.(Doc 4) This shows us how much he cared for people and didn’t have selfish ways.
