Antigone’s Moral Development The play Antigone by Sophocles, is about a girl who faces a family conflict over her deceased brother. The protagonist is Antigone and she stays the same morally throughout the play. Kohlberg’s Theory of Moral Development helps people understand the stages individuals morally move through as they mature more. Because of Antigone’s decisions and ideas at the beginning and the end of the play, she is a morally static character through the story.
Antigone, a play written thousands years ago, holds valuable lessons that still apply today. This play was written by Sophocles in Athens, the intellectual capital of ancient Greece. Antigone takes place in Ancient Greece and is a story about how the king of Thebes made a law that would kill everyone around him. Antigone’s brother died and Antigone gave him a burial to appease the gods against king Creon's order. He sentenced her to death and then watched as everyone close to him died.
Arrogance is a characteristic that many people possess, which also includes characters from books, novels, plays, movies, etc. Arrogance is also seen as a word that describes a person as one who does not listen to others, one who cares about one’s self, one who values their importance more than others, one who is too proud in a way that makes others uncomfortable, one who thinks their ideas are always correct, and many more ways that describe an arrogant person. Antigone, a play written by Sophocles, a Greek playwright, addresses how a person’s arrogance can lead them to their downfall. Most characters in Antigone, including Antigone herself and Creon, the new king of Thebes, possess this trait. But arguably, Creon holds this trait of arrogance the strongest.

In Sophocles` play, Antigone, he shows a story of a crazed man who lets pride takes over his actions causing the deaths of his loved ones. This essay will discuss Haimon, King Creon`s son, through statements that Sophocles himself wrote and inferences of his perspective. During the story Haimon does major actions such as; plea for his fiancée, commits suicide and even cast death upon King Creon. I believe that Haimon plead for Antigone`s life for more than one reason. He pleads for her because she was his fiancée and also because he heard the rumors the citizens passed around about King Creon.
What kind of actions would you take to honor your family? Would you go to the extremes of risking your life? Or would you obey rules placed before you and remember your loved ones in silence? In the play Antigone, the title character had to ask herself those questions before making a difficult decision. She had to choose to obey the rules or put her life in jeopardy for the sake of honoring her brother, who was seen as a rebel and would not be honored, according to the king’s orders (Sophocles, 22).
Green Arrow is a Marvel superhero who was given an objective from his father upon his father’s death. This objective was to eliminate the evil in his home city of Star City. This would be no doubt would be an act of justice; however, he decided that the best way to eliminate the evil was to quite literally eliminate the people who were evil. This made people hate this hero who was just trying to achieve justice. This in turn created the dilemma, “Was Green Arrow being just?”
n Antigone, Sophocles alludes to many Greek myths in order to accentuate how Antigone views the situation of her being punished by Creon for giving her brother the proper burial he deserved by the law of the gods and the importance of her words. Creon has decided to sentence Antigone to death for going against his words and following the laws of the gods by burying her beloved brother Polyneices. Creon’s tragic flaw is recognized when Antigone says, “How often I have heard the story of Niobe, / Tantalus’ wretched daughter, how the stone / Clung fast about her, ivy-close; and they say / The rain falls endlessly / And sifting soft snow; her tears are never done” (Sophocles 994). Pride can be one of man's strongest qualities. In Sophocles' play, Antigone, the Theme of pride becomes the cause for destruction for both Creon and Antigone in the play.. Creon's Pride blinds him to the injustice he commits against Antigone and the gods. Antigone's pride leaves her no choice but to be killed because of her beliefs. They Both automatically surrender to their own hubris and demonstrate how uncontrolled pride leads to personal downfalls and destruction in Antigone.
Creon probably wouldn’t have had anybody die in his own hands if he had did what the gods wanted and not what he wanted for his own pleasure. Another reason why Antigone is correct is because she did what the whole city would have
The definition of moral is this: “Concerned with the principles of right and wrong behavior and the goodness or badness of human character.” But, what is right, and what is wrong? Is there a straightforward, universal answer to that? The play Antigone addresses this. The two main characters are both acting upon what they see as morally just and right.
Once humbled when Oedipus was king, Creon became the king and hubris became his fatal flaw. Throughout Creon’s reign, he constantly ignored others and put himself first. Creon shows an example of Hubris when he doesn’t listen to Antigone’s argument by saying, “Go join them, then; if you must have your love, Find it in hell!” (211). This came after Antigone pleaded that all bodies deserve to be honored and buried.
The search for justice is never ending. Justice may be delayed, denied, or postponed, however, the search is timeless. To be just is to argue for fair rights for all. It is to be someone that will help the people of the community. However, many times justice is not sought and not given to those who need it most.

In the play, Choragos questioned Creon’s decision on killing Antigone for breaking Creon’s law by asking, “Do you really intend to steal this girl from your son?” Creon replies saying, “ No; Death will do that for me.” (Scene 2 lines 158-159.)
From world wars to present day national elections, pride can always be connected to many appalling, life-changing issues. Pride has always either been negative or positive, and it has been around forever. In the epic play Antigone, Sophocles demonstrates how Creon’s hubris allows for the downfall of himself and the killing of his family. Creon’s fatal flaw is his hubris. Creon not only loses his family, he also loses the trust of his people.
