During the time period in which To Kill a Mockingbird was written , life was incredibly difficult for people of different race. This was especially apparent for African american women because they were thought of as even lower than African American men. White men had all of the power during this time ,and they used it to abuse anybody at all different from them. Most who were against this were not courageous enough to stand up for themselves or others ,but the few that were showed how great they were as people. Calpurnia is a great example of how people can tribe in a terrible environment.
