The ‘Fat’ Stereotype The stigma for being what people call overweight or as it is more known as being fat is doleful. Being fat, no matter your size, comes with a lot of negativity. Most of it is always the same thing repeated until that becomes the normal. It becomes what a lot of people tend to associate towards a certain thing and it never goes away because of all the repetition it goes through. People don’t hesitate to point out your weight and they don’t care who’s around when they do. Despite only being in 8th grade, the need for uniforms became understandable. The middle school I went to was a K-8th grade type of school, so the factuality often gave us days where we were able dress down and wear regular clothes for the day. I decided to wear my worn down blue jeans with some dark colored shirt that didn’t match my jeans. The school classes were set-up a little weird and we didn’t have a set English class; instead, we had a “Writing” class. New stores are a hit and miss because you don’t know the sizing and what sizes they carry in stock. It’s almost like letting someone take you somewhere blindfolded; you never know what to expect with these types of things. The store was a nicely sized with clothes racks taking up 90% of the floor width. Clothes shopping was going well until a middle-aged woman walking up to me and patted me on the shoulder. She assumed my weight enough to tell me that the store I was in didn’t carry my size even though it did carry the size I needed. It wasn’t her tone or facial expressions that threw me off, but it was the way she worded it. The woman’s words implied that she knew I must have been a size over medium. She ruined the whole store for me after that and even though it had nice quality clothes, I never wanted to shop there
