I would address the issue of professionalism that the police department lacks. The media’s agenda loves playing with topics such as police brutality, racism, and other symptoms like this, but the root issue is the lack of professionalism. The use of force to protect an officer’s life when he feels threatened is justified. Sometimes a white officer arrests a black criminal. There is nothing wrong with either of these situations or a combination of the two. The media needs to stop telling us otherwise.
Professionalism covers a vast category of traits and skills an individual must process to be successful in a career. In this mini paper I will only have time to mention some of these traits and skills. This will be a hard task because the scrutiny of media and the public has made it difficult for officers to do their job. However, transparency will ultimately be rewarding because the public will come to trust law enforcement again. I would not tolerate corruption and ensure that officers I trust, and have personally worked with are selected for the Internal Investigations Unit. Their mission will be to find, and terminate any officer that is found to be corrupt. They will also monitor patrol operations and seek out new ways the department can become more professional.
I would get funding approved for body cameras for every patrol officer. This will help officers remember that they are being recorded and will serve as a reminder to always remain courteous and professional. The camera will also help protect the officer and department’s reputation when the officer is following protocol but a civilian tries to press false charges on the
