The use of Suspension of Natural Laws in Writing As Steven Wright once said, “To me comedy is just twisting reality. It's commenting or observing or twisting life.” A Midsummer Night’s Dream by William Shakespeare, like many other stories, involves comedy that is different and unique. Throughout the play, there are many moments involving magic that fracture the fine line that separates reality from fantasy, creating a lot of opportunities to develop new comedic moments. By suspending what is known as “natural laws,” the play can make some otherwise scary and serious scenes into comedic ones, by breaking away from the idea that the situation is life threatening. Shakespeare’s play, A Midsummer Night’s Dream uses the element of comedy, Suspension of Natural Laws, to create lively and delightful moments throughout the story by being surreal and different in the way it presents the comedy to the audience. Suspension of Natural Laws is a comedy element that alters what is possible to create humorous moments in the story. The comedy element is used in, act 2, scene 2 when Puck, a magical fairy, is told by the fairy king Oberon to use the juice of a magical flower on an Athenian man. The flower’s juice is said to make whoever it has been used on, to fall in love with the first thing they see. Upon finding the man, Puck begins to put the juice on the Athenian man who who is Lysander after Puck confused him for Demetrius, “Near this lack-love, this kill-courtesy. Churl, upon thy eyes I throw All the power this charm doth owe. When thou wakest, let love forbid Sleep his seat on thy eyelid” (2.2.77-81). By anointing the Athenian man, who happens to be Lysander, with the flower juice, his love for Hermia is reset and he is prone to fall in love with the first person or thing he sees.
