An Atlanta Superior Court Judge Mary E. Stanley has granted a change of venue motion in case of 22 month old Cooper Harris’s death. Justin Harris, the 35 year old father of Cooper was been charged with malice murder, felony murder as well as first degree cruelty to children after leaving his toddler son in a hot car for seven hours in June 2014. The Atlanta Police Department believed that Justin Harris intentionally left his son in the heated car while he went to work. They also stated that the father and son had previously went to breakfast the following morning, moments before driving the short distance to his place of work.

Socio-linguist Deborah Tannen demonstrates how men and women communicate differently in her essay “Sex, Lies and Conversation: Why Is It So Hard for Men and Women to Talk to Each Other?” In her observations of communication styles, she discusses the way in which men and women communicate leads them to conflict because they have different understanding of their partners’ role. She also explains male and female communication differences not only cause ineffective conversation, but also push couples into a dilemma in their relationship; however, as men and women better understand the differences, their relationship improves. In the first part of her essay, Tannen discusses men and women do not have enough effective communication, which damages their marriage.

However, she may have given up on the teaching responsibility from the moment the language “never came easily to [the daughter]” (340). Shaun Tan is a writer and illustrator; he is a Chinese national who lives in Australia. In his book, Tan writes a compilation of short abstract stories, all putting the reader through the experience of “the Other” and the hardships of being accepted and understood in society. The short story “The Water Buffalo” conveys a powerful allegory about youth, life indifference and our excursions through experiences both anticipated and unanticipated.
The difference in language leads to miscommunication but the overlying consequence of it is lack of understanding and empathy for one another which leads to conflict. “Language takes on a metonymic relation to culture in Tan's portrayal of the gap between the mothers and daughters in The Joy Luck Club.” (Hamilton). The language barriers between the daughters and the mothers create the cultural barriers. Language barriers emphasize and directly influences cultural barriers.
Tannen used her genderlect theory to help bridge that gap by acknowledging and achieving an understanding of the language of each gender. Conversation between men and women can be described like cross-cultural communication. This is the basis of Tannen’s You Just Don’t Understand. In an effort to bridge that communication gap between genders, she examined the differences between how and why people communicate.
