A Rose for Emily A Rose for Emily is a movie based on William Faulkner's short story and filmed by Lyndon Chubbuck and H. Kaye Dyal. From a general perspective, both movie and written work have a peculiar way of hooking the spectators to the plot. In the movie version something called “In medias res” which in Latin means “In the middle of things” is used. This technique places the viewer at the end of the story and allows the storyteller to jump back to the beginning after hooking the audience. This technique aligns perfectly with the pace of the story. Although Emily's father is a respected man, the signs of dementia are evident. This trait seems to be increased when he drinks, losing any sense of courtesy and good behavior. Dementia can be seen in all the family members, not just Emily's father, but also her aunt, finally being internalized, and absorbed by Emily herself. There are a few details throughout the story that foreshadow the nature of the movie. For example, the most important setting and the place where most of the story takes place. The house at the beginning of the story is beautiful; it could easily be the envy of the town. However, Emily's neglect of her causes the house to gradually deteriorate to the point of appearing to be a haunted house. Without hesitation I dare to write here, the house became a reflection of Emily's mind and feelings. When Emily’s father died, everybody was in shock, and the news spread all over town. But Emily was in denial; she would not accept it. When the people came to dispose of the corpse, it was stiff in the same position as that fateful day when his life vanished. This detail allowed me to anticipate the ending of the story. See, the smell appeared when the Yankee disappeared; that was the key piece. If the people had not taken care of Emily's father's corpse, this would have had the same destiny as the Yankee’s
