Connell also touches on how the roles can change: the dominant can become subservient or less than, and how the forceful and strong minded can become the weaker ones. General Zaroff and Sanger Rainsford are more similar than they are different. Aside from their diverse ethnicities, age, and initial opinions on The Most Dangerous Game, the two men are practically the same. Despite bearing a few minor differences, the similarities between Zaroff and Rainsford remarkably pronounced. Beginning with their backgrounds, Zaroff and Rainsford were both previously soldiers in the army. Readers can assume so, due to the time period of the story (1920’s), but are also provided evidence in both dialogue and action.

When I first met Rainsford, I thought of him as a heartless and inconsiderate person. As Whitney encouraged Rainsford to believe that all animals have feelings and should not be killed, Rainford responded with “Bah! They’ve no understanding” (Connell 1). Whitney was attempting to change Rainsfords point of view on hunting animals, yet Rainsford ignored his statement and had his mind set on only himself and what he loved to do. Although Rainsford is selfish and rude during the beginning of the story, his personality and attitude greatly differs when compared to the ending.

In this story, Rainsford exhibits some very helpful characteristics like his resourcefulness, his strategic planning, and his ability to reason. As a result of Rainsford’s questioning the validity of General Zaroff’s hunting methods, he ended up playing in the game. Although I believe Rainsford is a very helpful, interesting, and dynamic character, at the end of the story, he must give up his own personal morals to win the game.

Rainsford is a big game hunter who falls off a boat near the island of General Zaroff, a big Cossack general who is looking for an alternative to hunting dangerous animals but with a twist. Throughout “The Dangerous Game” Rainsford and General Zaroff both show examples of IRony and exert arrogance.
