The problem that has no name is the lack of identity or purpose that housewives felt in the 1950’s and 1960’s. This lack of identity or purpose stemmed from only being able to take care of the household and children. The problem with no name came from the cult of domesticity and this idea of the public/private split. In the 1950’s and 1960’s the idea that men ruled the public sphere and women ruled the private sphere was pushed onto the American public. This meant men where the ones who provided for the family while women just cleaned the house and watched the kids. This led for many housewives to feel like they had no purpose. They made sure everyone had everything they needed but no one asked if they were ok.
