The book Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson, is a historical fiction about a girl named Matilda trying to survive against yellow fever with Her Mother, Grandfather, and Eliza in Philadelphia. The theme of the book is “Perseverance allows the overcoming of hardships and brings hope to those who persevere.” During the novel Fever 1793, Matilda endured through the entire Yellow Fever epidemic with it having ups and downs that built hope and destroyed it completely, this is a reason that perseverance allows the overcoming of hardships and brings hope to those who persevere. Has an ordinary cold ever came out of nowhere and infected you, your friends and your family. This is the case for 14 year old Matilda Cook in Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson but this is not an ordinary cold, it is a raging yellow fever outbreak in the United States capitol Philadelphia (the capitol is later moved to its current location Washington D.C.). Matilda’s personality was altered a great amount over the course of the outbreak for example she started to become a more responsible worker and she was treated and respected more like a grown adult.
Laurie Halse Anderson masterfully tells the of the fictional character Matilda Cook and her family’s struggles through the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1793. While Matilda and her family are fictional characters, the epidemic which struck Philadelphia was quite real. Based on what I have read so far in the novel, Fever 1793, I believe it is reasonable to infer that Matilda’s mother will die or may even be dead already, but Matilda does not know yet. This will devastate both grandfather and Matilda. Lucille, Matilda’s mother, is the first person of the Cook family to contract yellow fever.
This material makes references in Chapter 4 when it is going to talk about the French and Indian War. In Europe this is known as the Seven years’ War; however, both named mean the same thing. The rivalry between Britain and French are too famous that they made an imperial showdown. This was a Global war, and both side have allies from the Indian tribes. The spark of the war start when they dispute the colonist in the Ohio River Valley.

War and Tension From the readings we find that there were many causes of tension and aspects during and after the French and Indian War. Many things built up over time and there was a general sense of tension between all of the empires. This only continued through the years with numerous wars between English, French, and Natives. These all led to the Treaty of Paris in 1763 and led America one step closer to the American Revolution. Our readings for this week show different aspects of one story and help create a narrative of the issues occurring and the outcomes of the tensions of America at the time.
McCullough starts the book off with the American colonies wanting freedom along with the conflict against the British forces. In 1775 everything led up to the major war that occurred in 1776. Tension is heavily implied between the opposing sides, even before the conflicts. I feel that because of the Americans actions of rebellion and the British forces coming to fight brought up major war between the two. The major conflict is that the colonies in America where still under British rule, yet so far away from England.
Throughout Fever 1793 several characters experience significant challenges or adverse situations but the one character that I think experienced the most challenges and was faced with the most adversity was Mattie. Grandfather’s death is when Mattie was faced with the most adversity. She changed a lot after his death, she became mentally stronger. Also, I learned a lot about life from Mattie’s response to her grandfather’s death.
Imagine what living in the American colonies during the seventeen-hundredth would be like, it was a period of chaos and instability due to the rise of a national American identity within the colonists caused by the separation between the colonies and Britain. Some major key events also contributed to the already growing tension, the French and Indian War, many unfair taxation put on the colonists by Britain, and the ratification of the Constitution. Although many lives were lost during the process, but through hard-fought battles, belief of freedom, and unity of the American colonists, everything eventually began to settle down and the colonists gained their independence from Britain, creating their own nation and their own form of government. The question, “Why the fighting started?” isn’t as complicated for King Philips War, as it is when examining Bacon’s Rebellion. Bacon’s rebellion was a result of settlers in the backcountry become upset about the weak efforts of the aristocrats in the East to protect them from Indian attacks.
