A particular federal agency is responsible for the measures that are conducted to protect food such as fruits, vegetables, livestock. The name of that particular federal agency is named the FDA or known as The Food and Drug Administration. The FDA is a large, U.S. government agency that concentrates its efforts on maintaining safe food and drug products for consumption. The Food and Drug Administration responsible for ensuring that foods are safe wholesome, safe, sanitary, and effective. The FDA ensures that these products are honestly, accurately, and informatively represented to the public (Food and Drug Administration, 2017).

The Food and Drug Administration founded in 1848 by the work of Lewis Caleb Beck, the FDA has grown in stature and responsibility to take charge of research, development, and regulation of food and drugs. Men, like Harvey Wiley, helped to oversee the administration of effective consumer protection policies, which led to the enacting of the Pure Food and Drug Act. The Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 was the first legislation in the country that sought to regulate pharmaceuticals and food products by requiring truth-in-labeling on products, creating inspectors of the drug and food manufacturing process, and creating a list of 10 dangerous drugs that had to be labeled at all times. This allowed the FDA to inspect plants, take unsafe products off of the shelf, and set guidelines on label information. There were several amendments passed to further allow this act to protect consumers. This includes the Durham Humphrey Amendment in 1938 which defined over the counter and prescription drugs.
