The Harlem Renaissance is also known as, “The New Negro Movement”, and it impacts today’s world in a huge way. This era was a movement for all of the African-Americans to show off their creativity in different fields of work. The different names that it was given were: New Negro Movement, Jazz Age, Negro Renaissance, and many more. It all started in a neighborhood, Harlem, New York, for which this movement is named after. It started in the 1920s and ended in the 1930s. This movement influenced many people to speak up about African-Americanproblems. There were many known people who did so. Billie Holiday did so by becoming a huge voice in the music industry. She used her music to fight for racial justice. In her music, she expresses “personal tragedies and multiple traumas she experienced in her life” (Gray). Billie earned her nickname of “Lady Day'', which she got from another artist who loved the meaning of her music. Holiday didn’t have a very nice childhood, between dropping out of school, being taken away from her mother, being a victim of attempted rape, sex trafficking, and racial prejudice. She started music early and was able to put all the emotions from her past into her music. Her most well known song is called, “Strange Fruit”, and the story behind the song is about lynchings of African-Americans. She created music that was able to tell a story, but also people would be able to dance to. People loved her music and her when she worked in nightclubs.
