The Best is the Morning
Imagine that you wake up in the morning without any concerns about the rest of the day. You “buzz around the house on espresso,” and nothing else. That is what the persona of this poem loves about the morning. The purpose of Billy Collins in his poem, “Morning,” is showing his love to the morning and putting the reader in the place of the persona through the usage of word choice, the remarkable form of the poem, and the sensory details he mentions.
In this poem, the poet contrasts the morning with the afternoon, the evening and the night, and contributes the feelings of the persona in the morning through the successful usage of the word choice. The persona describes the other times of the day with the words “swale” and “sudden dip”, which creates a bad mood. Also, he explains the night with its “notorious perfumes”, which makes the reader feel the disgusting smell, as the persona feels in the rest of the day. The first detail that catches the attention of the reader it the disorder of the stanzas and the lines. This might contribute to the mood of the morning because morning is the time where the people are unaware of the things happening, and even groggy. They have their pajamas on them, without the rules and the concerns of their lives. Likewise, the poet gets rid of the concerns about having any rule or order in his poem by not having any order in his stanzas and the lines, thus he overlaps with the mood of the morning. Moreover, he places the significant parts of the poem in separate lines, and this choice makes the reader understand the mood-changing part more easily. For instance, the line “This is the best” is placed separately, and this choice shows the importance of this phrase
