During a horrible accident, Captain William Farnsworth Cook will save Matilda's life (Anderson 144), The theme of family runs through the veins of the story, these vein helps give the courage that the main character passes through the difficulties. Another theme of women strength is a side theme . Matilda (nickname Mattie) Cooks helps her grandfather when she was sick by finding food (Anderson 84) and Eliza helps the sick (Anderson 167) proves the strength that woman are capable of . The last theme is mortality.
Here is what happens that shows this theme. Willow Chance a twelve year old girl had to overcome the sudden loss of both her parents, she had a hard time dealing, but with the help of Mai, Pattie, Dell Duke, and even Quang-Ha she was able to persevere. Mai and Quang-Ha had lived in a garage for several years because they never had enough money to live in a real home, despite that they made the best of it. Willow Chance persevered when her teachers thought she had cheated on a test she got a perfect score despite the fact that she knew she didn’t cheat. This theme is shown in real life when friends help someone cope with the death of a loved one and you persevere and go back to living your life normally.
These themes are common in most of the stories and poems read during this semester. It has enabled me to realize the similarities in many of the books people read everyday and what lessons are learned. These lesson can go from simple to complex. The freedom for some ethnicities in some environments can be hard because they can be easily discriminated against because of their race or their color. The masks people wear are to hide their true feelings, so they become something that people will become more accepting of and not judge them.

In the novel The Things They Carried, Tim O’Brien expresses to the reader why the men went to the war and continued to fight it. In the first chapter, “The Things They Carried,” O’Brien states “It was not courage, exactly; the object was not valor. Rather they were too frightened to be cowards.” The soldiers went to war not because they were courageous and ready to fight, but because they felt the need to go. They were afraid and coped with their lack of courage by telling stories (to themselves or aloud) and applied humor to the situations they encountered.
This supports my theme because he claims to have given it to one of the people that are looking for it and again, he always seems to be the center of all the problems in the school. As the story is coming to an end, Brody Valentine starts to get cold feet. On page 9 of part 3, Brody wants to give up because he has been through a lot in that school year. This goes against my theme because Brody’s main mission is to never give up, follow signs and lead to great choices. In the last parts of the book, Brody Valentine learns that having people around you always helps with problems and overcoming fears.
One example of this is when Lina, the main character, is being seperated from her father and she starts to draw a map of the places that she was going to pass along to her father. During this event, Lina is going through a very tough time and she strives to find a way to get back to her after. Lina shows hope in this situation by drawing a map which she hopes that would one day reach her father even though she still feels the loss of his absence. Characters Help Establish a Theme Characters are used to help develop a theme and create a more relatable story. In the book, “Out of the Dust” by Karen Hesse, Billie Jo and her father stay strong through the dust bowl and the death of their family members. Billie Jo and daddy, from “Out of the Dust”, helped to develop the theme that when you’re at the end of the rope, tie a knot and hold on because of how they persevere through their hardships. Daddy shows persistence in how he never lets his sadness overcome him. First, even though his wife was gone, he never stopped digging the pond.
