Change and hope are what gets people through life but sometimes how it’s presented to us is more important than the message itself. In the poem, “New Days Lyric”, the author, Amanda Gorman, describes the experience she and others around her had when it came to COVID-19. The poem embarks on a mental journey where Gorman describes from beginning to end the effect the coronavirus had on the world and how everyone overcame it. The author also uses a point in the world (the coronavirus) that everyone experienced in order to allow readers to relate to the poem and what she has to say. In the poem, the author chose the words “all together” and “altogether” to show the differences between the people and the world when coming out of COVID, “And our hearts, once altogether beaten, Now all together beat”. The word ‘altogether’ is used in most cases to describe an object that is totally or completely together as one whole thing while the words ‘all together’ are used in the context as something that is in one group or place all at once. The line ‘...once altogether beaten’ applies a negative connotation to ‘altogether’ meaning it explains how when everyone was hit by COVID it ‘beat them down’ and hurt people in many ways mentally and physically. On the other hand, in the line ‘Now all together beat’ it connotes a more positive feel to the word by using it in the context of describing how the ones who made it out of COVID alive were hurting due to either loses or the situation itself but now these people are coming out of the situation with one another and as a group. The words work with each other to display the theme by showing how although they got harmed and hurt by the coronavirus, they were able to come out stronger and more connected with each other than before due to their hope and trust in one
