Lorraine Hansberry is an American-born playwright, who has motivated many by her unique and powerful writing. She is known for plays such as The Sign in Sidney Brustein's Window, and Les Blancs. A Raisin in the Sun is her most fundamental piece. Not only does A Raisin in the Sun symbolize endurance and perseverance in the chase of the American Dream, but it also symbolizes racism and the fight for equality. She was inspired to write A Raisin in the Sun when she drew upon the lives of working-class Black people who rented from her father and went to school with her on Chicago's South Side, but she also highlights her experiences. In the play, A Raisin in the Sun, Lorraine Hansberry presents resilience in the characters of Beneatha, Ruth, and Mama to convey the gender norms and the disparency between men and women regarding equality, ultimately illustrating the unfair treatment of Black women in the 1950s. …show more content…

For example, when Beneatha loses her share of the money, she says, “While I was sleeping in that bed in there, people went out and took the future right out of my hands! And nobody asked me, nobody consulted me – they just went out and changed my life!” (Hansberry 134). This depicts the hardships and the unfairness in Beneathas life. This indicates the topic of unfair gender gaps in A Raisin in the Sun because it shows that before she can even handle her own money her brother loses it. From that point on in the book we see Beneatha emotionally distraught, this shows how much of an effect this situation has on her. This may indicate how used to disappointment and inequality Beneatha is, she might feel as if she has no one to relate
