For our visual representation of the novel Indignation, we focused on the prevalent emotions that were featured from Marcus and the people around him. We specifically honed our attention on specific moments where the emotions were at the height of tension. We have divided a large box into four smaller sections to achieve this goal. The large box represents the novel in its entirety, while the smaller sections represent the moments of heightened emotion. The first box features Korean War propaganda on the walls surrounding the representation of Marcus, who is presented by a ball of paper clips. We chose paperclips because they can be pulled in all directions and entangled together, which help to represent the chaos that exists within Marcus’s mind, and that is sparked by his fear of the war. The walls have white felt material and plastic wrap on the front to signify us viewing the butchershop from the outside. The front of the plastic wrap has a giant lock in order to represent how Marcus feels trapped and locked within his family structure in New Jersey. Again Marcus is represented by paperclips, as is his father. However, his father’s paperclips are red to signify his rage. The third section features his first dorm room at Winesburg College. A bunk bed is made out of paperclips, where Marcus lays on the bottom, who is still represented by paperclips, but now has some red ones mixed in as well to show his becoming more similar to his father. His roommate, a careless yet instigative character, lays on the top bunk represented with a multitude of colors to show his dynamic personality.
