The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie is a young adult fiction novel that explores the theme of opportunity and success. Throughout the novel, this theme is portrayed by multiple characters. This theme is seen through the journey of Junior, the protagonist of the story, and his pursuit of achieving his goals. This theme can also see through Mary, his sister, who went through her own journey to achieve her dreams. Moving away from a community can be the best thing to do sometimes, even with the setbacks and sacrifices that come with it. This idea is portrayed through Mary’s journey of wanting to live her dream. "She kept writing in her book. And she kept working up the courage to show it to somebody. And then she just stopped." (Alexie 39) This quote shows how Mary never taking the opportunity to show her work led to her not succeeding. If she showed her work, she could have had a way to succeed, but in not doing so she never had a way to succeed. In another instance though, it can be seen how Mary taking advantage of an opportunity led to her succeeding. ”But she only got married so quickly and left the rez because I had left the rez first.” (Pg. 211) This quote shows how Mary taking advantage of an opportunity led to her success. In this example, Mary saw Junior leaving the rez as an opportunity for her to leave the rez and live out her dream. If she never took inspiration from Junior leaving the rez, she would have never gotten to live out her
