Gatsby will be known as a different man to different people. I think to most of the celebrities out there that Mr. Gatsby will just be known as a man who threw parties and wanted people to have fun. We got to interview Daisy Buchanan, who was a neighbor of Mr. Gatsby, and she had this to say about Mr. Gatsby, ¨He was such a wonderful man. He was the man that I fell in love with and who I wanted a future with. He was always there for me when I needed him, and he was so patient with me.

After Gatsby left North Dakota, he continuously pushes himself to become a better man, and after finding Dan Cody, he becomes obsessed with the idea of becoming rich. As a result of his great perseverance, he ends up finding his wealth from bootlegging liquor and fake stocks. Although he found wealth by corrupt means, Gatsby's constant commitment to becoming rich shows how he is a great man with great ambition.
Gatsby’s “Greatness” Greatness is showed by the choices we make in life. From how we see the circumstances and how we react to them. Gatsby is not as great of a man as Nick claims that he is. Gatsby makes foolish, childish and delusional decisions and not at all great.
Throughout The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby is a self subservient character whose inner inhibitions, pleasure seeking lifestyle, and hubris prevent him from caring about how he affects other people. The only people to whom he ever gives the time of day are those who benefit him. Gatsby’s actions throughout the book are exemplary of these traits. The scope of Gatsby’s selfishness goes all the way to his daily life and the people he surrounds himself with. In his life he never really cared about anyone only what they could do for him.
Throughout the novel, Gatsby displays his riches through his mansion, expensive car, and many other things. Nick even describes how extravagant Gatsby’s house is, saying, “The one on my right was a colossal affair by any standard—it was a factual imitation of some Hôtel de Ville in Normandy, with a tower on one side, spanking new under a thin beard of raw ivy, and a marble swimming pool, and more than forty acres of lawn and garden” (Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby 5). As Nick describes, Gatsby’s house is very large and modern, which shows his affluence. Before he became rich and privileged, Gatsby was James Gatz, a poor Midwestern boy who dreamed of becoming wealthy. This dream led Gatsby to do crazy things in order to make money, but it worked out for him in the end.
Being “The Great” is known for doing big, dramatic, and heroic accomplishments. It's believed this person should be helping the community or others, doing big things for the people. Gatsby may be seen as successful due some of his history and how much money he had said. It’s understandable how people think he is so great, he knows a lot of rich people, gets what he wants but it seems he has no actual dream or goal that has to do with anyone that doesn't do anything with himself. Jay Gatsby is not “The Great”.

Jay Gatsby wanted to make a rich man out of himself and when he did he moved to West Egg. West Egg is for the “New Rich” and it shows in Gatsby’s demeanor. Gatsby had worked and even been a criminal in order to make his fortune but nonetheless he realized the American Dream. Fitzgerald too depicts the American Dream. Fitzgerald rushed to make many novels and short stories in order to make to have his slice of fame and fortune (Willett).
In a sense, the word “great” can be attributed to large and grand things such as Gatsby’s, house, his lavish parties, his wealth, and even his personality. All of these can be viewed as trophies of success or in a particular person’s eyes, greatness. Throughout the novel Nick is enamored by Gatsby's outstanding personality and ability to hold onto hope. He describes Gatsby as having, “..an extraordinary gift for hope, a romantic readiness such as I have never found in any other person and which it is not likely I shall ever find again. ”(2).
